In 1971, the U.S. Congress declared that “wild free-roaming horses and burros are living symbols of the historic and pioneer spirit of the West; and that they contribute to the diversity of life forms within the Nation and enrich the lives of the American people.” Cindy Lee and the Wags and Menace Make a Difference Foundation agree, and have made a valiant effort to help save thousands of wild mustangs, horses, and burros. Passionate about continuing to support their medical care, the Foundation also provides funds to transport the animals to sanctuaries when necessary and donates blankets and extensive food supplies to keep them warm and well nourished in winter.
Equine Grassroots Volunteerism
Over the years, the Wags and Menace Make a Difference Foundation has saved thousands of wild mustangs from all over the United States that were destined for slaughter. “This effort is about more than just saving the animals, but saving a vital part of our American heritage,” says Cindy Lee. “These wild free-roaming horses and burros are living symbols of the pioneer spirit of the West and we will do whatever it takes to protect them.” In addition to funding the medical care, rescue, and rehabilitation of wild mustangs, horses, and burros, Cindy Lee gives 200 percent of herself to every mission. “We recently rescued—and adopted—an entire family, also known as a band, of extremely rare wild Cremello horses and funded building a barn and pastures for them where they can live out their lives and be as wild and free as they were meant to be.” To help protect our national heritage, visit our How To Help page.

25 Wild and Domestic Horses Saved from Slaughter
2013 was a banner year for the Wags and Menace Make a Difference Foundation. Cindy Lee and the Wags and Menace Make A Difference Foundation have saved over 25 wild and domestic horses from slaughter and funded all of their medical care at Spirit Wind Horse Rescue.

34 Wild Mustangs Saved From Slaughter
Cindy Lee and the Wags and Menace Make a Difference Foundation saved 34 wild mustangs from the Fallon Nevada Kill Auction on August 17th, 2013. These wild mustangs will now live out the rest of their lives in a private sanctuary in California.

DENVER, Co (September 3, 2013)–Unsung hero, Cindy A. Lee, President of the Wags and Menace Make A Difference Foundation, known on Petline 9, saved a total of 43 wild horses from going to alleged slaughter from the contested Fort McDermitt roundup. The Denver-based nonprofit first saved 34 wild mustangs from alleged slaughter at the livestock auction in Fallon, NV on August 17th. The following week they saved 9 unbranded wild horses who were held up along with 140 others in a legal action that was eventually dismissed. All 43 wild mustangs saved were given veterinary care including vaccinations and care for injuries caused by the roundup and transport to the auction. The McDermitt 43 shipped out and arrived yesterday at two sanctuaries in California. There they will live out their lives in peace and be forever free from harassment.
“This is our American heritage and what’s happening to the wild mustangs is wrong”, says Cindy A. Lee. “My foundation and I will work to save them from harm.”
The Wags and Menace Make a Difference Foundation is a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) organization that seeks to provide medical treatment for sick animals in Colorado and the United States, to fund organizations and activities that benefit animals, and to inspire, teach, and motivate other individuals and organizations to achieve similar objectives.

Bravo’s Equine Emergency Medical Funding and Treatment
Cindy Lee of the Wags and Menace Make a Difference Foundation are sponsoring all of Bravo’s medical needs from an OTB – Off Track Betting thoroughbred rescue from a bad situation several years ago. Bravo had a horrible abscess on the side of his face with a lot of swelling. Thanks to the efforts of the Wags and Menace Make a Difference Foundation, Bravo is now on the road to recovery.
Zarah’s Emergency Medical Treatment
Zarah was rescued from slaughter some years back . She is beautiful yet has always been a little aloof due to her mistreatment by Humans. When we picked her up she had a broken pelvis. Today she cut her foot really badly and will be needing stitches and a cast. Thank you Cindy and your incredible foundation, the Wags and Menace Make a Difference Foundation for paying for her medical needs.
Mikasi (translates to White Moon in Hokan, from the Hokan Tribe)
Cindy Lee of the Wags and Menace Make a Difference Foundation had the honor to name one of the rescued unbranded colts that were rescued from slaughter in Nevada. Mikasi had a bad abcess to his foot/lower leg region. Wags and Menace funded his extensive urgent medical care and treatment. He is currently in the recovery process.
Mikasi & Taima adopted wild colts from McDermott Roundup and transports to Spirit Wind Horse Rescue
Cindy A. Lee and the Wags and Menace Make a Difference Program Foundation rescued these six traumatized colts from the 149 unbranded horses that were under a judge’s restraining order from the McDermott roundup. (Mikasi means “White Moon”) and (Taima means “Loud Thunder”)
Mikasi suffered a serious hoof abcess, barely missing his bone. Both he and his shy friend Taima arrived lame. Thanks to Cindy Lee of the Wags and Menace Make A Difference Foundation, Mikasi & Taima have been receiving the medical care they both so desperately need.
The best news ever is that Cindy Lee and her Wags and Menace Make A Difference Foundation will be adopting both Mikasi and his best buddy Taima and moving them to their forever home at the Spirit Wind Horse Rescue facility in Crawford, Colorado!

Wild Mustang Colts Rescued
Last summer there was a mad and frantic dash which included not only many rescue organizations but individuals who raced to the sale barn in Fallon Nevada to save hundreds of unbranded mustangs from slaughter, now known as the Fort McDermott round up. There was much controversy regarding the round up of these wild horses, some being unbranded. Cindy A. Lee worked tirelessly that day saving many mustangs, some of which were quite young and in very bad shape, thank you to her foundation the Wags and Menace Make a Difference Program Foundation and her medical fund she was able to help two very special colts which she later named Mikasi and Taima.
After they were rescued and shipped to a place to recover in California, both colts came up lame, young Mikasi suffered a serious hoof abscess, barely missing his bone. Both he and his shy friend Taima arrived lame and were in desperate need of immediate medical care, which thankfully Cindy was able to insure they got. Cindy fell in love with the two little colts who became inseparable, and so she does what she always does, she adopted the two of them and now that they are healthy they have since been transported and have come to live out the rest of their lives here in Colorado amongst the Spirit Wind Horse Rescue herd.
After a long haul, they arrived safe and sound where they will be able to live out the rest of their lives in peace. Thank you to Cindy for all she does for our wild friends. Welcome little Mikasi and Taima to your new home.
Nevada Horse Lomasi Saved from Slaughter and Adopted by Cindy Lee
Cindy Lee of the Wags and Menace Make a Difference Foundation adopted a wild mustang foal from the Fallon Nevada Kill Auction. Lomasi was saved from slaughter and will now live out her days with her mom, Music at Spirit Horse Rescue, Crawford, Colorado.
The story of Lomasi:
Lomasi has been adopted by Cindy A. Lee, Baxter and the Wags and Menace Make a Difference Foundation. She will always be taken care of for the rest of her life and will remain here with her mom, Music. Cindy and the Wags and Menace Make a Difference Foundation will be covering any medical needs for both mom and baby. We are so grateful to Cindy and her amazing foundation for caring so much about these beautiful wild mustangs. Many were not as lucky as this little girl and her mom, many are somewhere headed to slaughter. One day they were safe and wild and free and then all hell broke loose. Lets take the time to think about those that were not the lucky ones that were saved.
Update as of November 1st, 2013:
Now 6 months old, this little mustang girl sustained brutal injuries to her face, her eye socket was broken and part of the bone that runs down her nose. You will see some of the pictures that she may look deformed, but to me, she is perfect in every way. She is a reminder of why we have to continue to save these beautiful creatures. She now cannot breath properly through the one side of her nose and so Cindy is having x-rays sent to CSU to see if something can be done. Thank you Cindy for all you do for our wild ones. Thank you to Shawn Greer who through patience and consistency trained this little girl to be a trusting young mustang, something if she had been human, considering what she went through is a testimony unto itself. Thank you to Dr. John for being so kind and tender with this young baby who has endured way to much in her short little life.
Saved family of mustangs from slaughter and funding all of their medical, feed, and transport to Spirit Wind Horse Rescue.
We would like to introduce you all to our new family of mustangs that will be coming to stay with us at Spirit Wind Horse Rescue from the Virginia Range Horses. These horses were rounded up during separate occasions with many others and sent to the sale barn where they were rescued as opposed to going to slaughter.
We have decided that due to circumstances involving them possibly having to be separated in order to find them permanent homes that we did not want to see this happen. We felt that after all they have endured, they should be allowed to live out their lives as a family within the world that through no fault of their own they have now been thrown into.
None of this would have been possible if it had not been for Cindy A Lee, Baxter and The Wags and Menace Foundation who felt as strongly as us about keeping them together. Thank you to Cindy and her amazing organization for paying for their medical, transport and feed so that they can remain together forever. Cindy has named the little one Wanageeska – White Spirit in Sioux. If it had not been for Cindy and her organization this bonded family would probably have had to been separated never to see each other again. What a tragedy it would have been for them.

Some History:
The Creams are a couple of generations down from Bubba’s band. As far as color genetics go, the experts say that they are the product of a double dilute buckskin with roan influence. Each generation got lighter and lighter, starting out as standard buckskins and grullas, then light buckskins, then cream buckskins with black points, then total cream color with each successive generation.
Bubba’s chief rival was Sentinel who carried the roan gene. They were known to steal mares from each others’ band although after some time the mares would usually find their way back to their original bands.
The 3 crèmes were picked up in Fernley Nevada in Lyon county on or around December 13, 2012. They were sent to the to the Nevada Livestock Auction on January 9, 2013.
The family is a very unique 3 they appear to be creamellos however what they really are are dulited buckskins, well the Sire and the colt are the mare is a very light palomino. They went thru so much terror and trauma at the auction-the young colt was separated from his family and could be heard all thru the auction yard screaming and flinging himself against the panels trying to find them. They were then taken in by a lone sorrel and created there own little band with the sorrel now being their watcher and protector.
This family of 4 are shy and very timid and extremely bonded to each other. The diluted buckskins have been traced back to about 6 generations of Virginia range horses.

Virginia Range Cremello Family of Horses Rescued
Thank you to Cindy A Lee and The Wags and Menace Make a Difference Program Foundation who has permanently adopted this family, they will forever be together here in Colorado. They are part of the Virginia Range horses that were rounded up in 2012 and were lucky enough to be saved from slaughter. Shawn Greer will be going to pick them up along with his wife Sunday Sesler Greer and their two pitties Diesel and Ellie, I will be holding down the fort until their return on Sunday. We will keep you updated on their travels and arrival here at Spirit Wind Horse Rescue where they will find sanctuary at Beth Keenan’s farm. Can’t wait to meet this beautiful family. Without Cindy A Lee and her Foundation this family may very well have been separated, so we are glad that we get to give them at least this, now in their human world. Beautiful wild mustangs.
